Class Outline: Information Processing 10 (2020 - 2021) 


Goal:

To increase each student's basic skill and ability in using computers, research, and information processing in a school and work environment.

Outcomes and Indicators:

Core Ideas: 

Students will have a better understanding of the following:

  • Why is digital citizenship important?
  • How does information processing technology impact society and the way we live?
  • What is the value of considering audience and purpose when communicating digitally?
  • What role does information processing play in the production of projects?
  • How does digital communication impact my life and my community?
  • What are the best practices for information processing in various professional contexts?
  • How can I apply my information processing skills, knowledge and understandings to creative processes?

Core Skills:
Students will be able to demonstrate understanding and ability in the following skills:

  • Task and Management: Use information-based decision making to plan and prioritize projects.
  • Digital Citizenship & Communication: Discuss and explore concepts related to privacy, copyright, plagiarism and cyber-bullying. Includes the use of email and social media.
  • Keyboarding: Students will work towards a goal of typing accurately at 30 words per minute.
  • Research: Students will demonstrate the ability to independently research and retrieve information from the internet in a timely manner.
  • Online Learning & Digital Citizenship: Students will use and create blogs and explore core ideas behind digital technology.
  • Computer Technology: Being able to identify parts and pieces of basic computer hardware and what they are used for.
  • Word-processing Design: Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to use and create products on word processors such as letters, resumes and cover letters.
  • Presentation Design: Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to use and create presentation software to communicate ideas.
  • Spread-sheet Design: Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to use and create basic spreadsheets.
  • Database Design: Students will be able to use and create basic spreadsheets.

Portfolio Grading:

Your mark will be determined by demonstrating competency of the skills listed above through an online digital portfolio based on the following:
  • Typing (25%): Being able to type quickly and accurately is an important skill. The best way to improve is by practicing touch-typing daily. You will be assessed by the use of a weekly typing log and through periodic typing tests.
  • Understanding (35%): As students explore material, they can test and demonstrate their understanding of the material through online worksheets.
  • Work Portfolio (40%): Students will have a choice of several online projects to work on as they explore the course material. This is their chance to apply their knowledge practically. Students will self assess their work based on online rubrics.
